How to choose the best insulation for facade

The choice of the bes tinsulation for a facade is one of the most important decisions when designing a building, since the quality of life of its occupants will depend to a great extent on it.

The current legislation regarding residential construction establishes minimum criteria that must comply with the insulation systems of buildings to ensure their energy efficiency and habitability. There are multiple solutions on the market, but we should bear in mind that not all of them are equally effective, nor do they involve the same cost of execution or efficiency. Therefore, we will give some guidelines on how to choose the best insulation for the facade.

Tips for choosing the best insulation for your facade

All energy renovation must be intended to improve the isolation of the building, without its execution interfering in the life of the interior of the building. In addition, the energy renovation of the facade should not stain anything inside the building, nor can it reduce the useful surface of the house. Thanks to the thermal insulation of the facade, besides eliminating all the thermal bridges of the enclosure, it is possible to reinforce the structure of the envelope of the building.

There is a wide range of insulation systems, although they always depend on the constructive characteristics, like the type of wall or the space to one side and another of this. When isolating, you can opt for different materials such as polystyrene, mineral wool or polyurethane.

The characteristics that must be met are:

  • Elimination of thermal bridges.
  • Elimination of condensation and moisture leaks.
  • Not affecting the interior space of the building.
  • Correcting cracks in the envelope.
  • Protecting the structure against thermal shocks.

SATE system of insulation of facades

This Exterior Thermal Insulation System (SATE, the Spanish acronym) consists of the application of an insulating mortar coating to the exterior façade, protected with a mineral mortar. The fixing of the insulation material is done in both an adhesive and a mechanical way. It is one of the most effective procedures for thermally insulating the facade of a building and its cost is amortizedo ver a period of approximately ten years. In addition, it contributes to reduce energy losses by more than 50%.

Polyurethane systems for facades

Polyurethane systems are one of the best materials in terms of insulationability. In addition, thanks to their great adaptability and versatility, polyurethane systems are one of the most chosen options for their efficiency in terms of value for money. The injected polyurethane is the option that adapts to the filling of air chambers. When the construction conditions make it advisable to insulate from the outside, the polyurethane (for ventilated façade) or polyurethane sandwich panels (non-ventilated façade) will be chosen. In the case of insulation by the inside, the most advisable may be toopt for polyurethane sheets, as these insulate 50% more of the rock wool. In addition, although the differences between expanded polystyrene, extruded polystyrene, mineral wool and polyurethane systems (PUR) are few decimals, they can represent a difference of 3-4 cm to obtain the same thermal performance.
